About the museum
The association Sites et monuments du Valromey, founded in 1967, bought a Renaissance house dated 1561 in Lochieu in 1971. After the building was restored, the museum opened to the public in 1974 and was inaugurated on July 27, 1975. Two annexes opened in 1977 and 1981, followed by a barn in 1986. In 1989, the association signed an agreement with the Ain département, to which it gave the collections and buildings in 1996.
The museum tells the story of domestic life in the low mountains between 1850 and 1950, as well as the history of the Bugey. The barns host exhibitions on tools and woodworking crafts; a modern building presents a large collection of turned wooden objects. The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003.
In 2026, the Ain département, the Bugey Sud community of municipalities and the commune of Arvière-en-Valromey launched a study on the future of the site. It envisages a project combining accommodation, cultural and heritage activities, workshops and seminars.
