About the museum

The Musée des Alpilles was created on 25 March 1919 by a decision of the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence town council, at the initiative of the geologist and palaeontologist Pierre de Brun. The town wanted to set up, in the Renaissance house du Planet on the place Favier, a museum of old and modern objects of artistic, documentary or local interest. The building, also known as the Hôtel Mistral de Mondragon, is a Renaissance town mansion listed as a historic monument, built around a fine inner courtyard.

The museum preserves, studies and promotes the historical and ethnographic heritage of Saint-Rémy and of the region between the Rhône, the Durance and the Alpilles massif. Its route was fully renovated in 2005 and is presented as a walk through time and space: fossils, models, tools, everyday objects, costumes, photographs, paintings and drawings show the relationship between people and nature.

A graphic arts area, developed around a typography workshop, presents contemporary prints and works from the old collection, as well as printmakers from south-east France. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label and the “Valeur Parc naturel régional” mark.
