About the museum

The Musée Estrine is housed in the Hôtel Estrine in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Since 1989, the association Présence Van Gogh has been building a painting collection in keeping with Vincent van Gogh’s wish, during his stay in Saint-Rémy in 1889–1890, that living painters be less overlooked. The museum holds no works by Van Gogh but hosts an interpretation center devoted to him.

The collections come mainly from donations, first from artists who had exhibited at the Hôtel Estrine, then from artists’ families and collectors who are friends of the museum. They are devoted to painting and graphic arts of the 20th and 21st centuries and revolve around two figures linked to Saint-Rémy: Vincent van Gogh and the Cubist painter Albert Gleizes, who settled in Saint-Rémy in 1927 with Juliette Roche.

The museum holds the largest collection of André Marchand, with about 130 works, more than thirty works by Albert Gleizes and about thirty by Édouard Pignon. It has held the “Musée de France” designation since 2007.
