About the museum
The Musée des Amis de Thann is housed in Thann's former grain hall (halle aux blés), on the banks of the Thur. It is run by the association Les Amis de Thann, which is also the town's history society.
The route runs over four levels. The ground floor presents an 18th-century oak wine press, painted panels of the bangards, the field wardens (gardes champêtres) of Thann from the Middle Ages to the Revolution, and viticulture tools. The first floor is devoted to local history: the Engelbourg castle, the development of the town, the cult of Saint Thiébaut, coins and seals struck in Thann, a papal bull of 1340, a Rhenish Renaissance walnut cabinet, an 18th-century faience stove and polychrome wooden statues, including a 13th-century Virgin and Child.
The second floor houses a gallery of local painters, including Henner and Walch, porcelain painted by Joseph Conrad, a collection of firefighters' helmets and mementos of Thann families. The third floor presents objects from the wars of 1870, 1914–1918 and 1939–1945, everyday objects of the 19th century, a clog-maker's workshop and tools from the textile industry. One room hosts themed exhibitions in summer. The holdings also include images of “Thann autrefois” and a collection of glass plates that is being digitized.
