About the museum

The Château du Bucheneck is a moated manor house, listed as a historic monument since 1994. Several noble families lived in it until 1289; from then on it was the seat of the bishop’s bailiff. Sold as national property in 1793, it housed a factory from 1863, and in 1900 it was bought by Charles Wittmer, who modernised the complex.

In 1977 the last owners sold the castle to the Town of Soultz, which set about safeguarding it. At the instigation of the local history society “Les Amis du Vieux Soultz”, the town opened a local history museum there in 1992. It is a municipal museum: the commune owns the building.

The rooms evoke the history of Soultz and its notable families, such as the Waldner de Freundstein and the Heeckeren d’Anthès, as well as the Order of Malta, traditional crafts, costumes, weapons, religious art and Jewish memory. The museum also gives a place to the illustrator Robert Beltz. The most remarkable piece is a large model of the town as it looked in 1838.
