About the museum
The Musée des Arts et de l’Archéologie de Valenciennes is the city’s former Musée des Beaux-Arts, located on boulevard Watteau in a building constructed in the early 20th century and opened in 1909. The museum considered its former name too restrictive and is preparing a new scientific and cultural project that broadens its scope to art and archaeology.
The building has been listed as a historic monument since March 2023. Renovations already took place in the 1990s and then in 2014–2015, when the museum reopened with an exhibition on Watteau and 18th-century French landscape painters.
The museum is closed again for major works. Planned are the replacement of the glass roof, which covers about 80% of the roof, improved insulation, the installation of a new elevator, a redesigned visitor route for all audiences, and the restoration of works, including two paintings by Rubens, “Le Triomphe de l’Eucharistie” and “Élie et l’ange.” Until the reopening, events and activities are offered outside the museum.
