About the museum
The Musée des Bastides is the final part of the programme presented for the regional “Stations Bastides” competition, which Monflanquin won in 1990. It forms part of a policy to enhance the bastide of Monflanquin, combining heritage, cultural projects, economic development and tourism.
The museum was designed in 1996 by architect and museographer Zette Cazalas. It is set over two floors in the tourist information office of Monflanquin and recalls the town’s position on the tourist route between Périgord and Agenais.
The route tells the story of the birth, in the 13th and 14th centuries, of some 350 new towns in the South-West, at a time when the region was shared between the French and the English. It explains the historical conditions of their founding, their rational town planning and their role in medieval society, through models, panels in French and English, contemporary sculptures and sound and visual documents. The visit begins on the second floor, in front of the model of Monflanquin.
