About the museum

The museum occupies the Hôtel Fayet, built in the 17th century and extended in the 19th century. This elegant townhouse, with a large artist's studio, belonged to the family of Gustave Fayet, entrepreneur, collector and painter. The town of Béziers bought the building in 1966 and turned it into a museum in 1990; since 2019 the mansion has carried the “Maison des illustres” label.

The museum presents the fine arts collections of Béziers' museums. One of its highlights is the studio holdings of the sculptor Jean-Antoine Injalbert (1845–1933), a Neo-Baroque artist from Béziers who was in great demand in his time, whose talent as a modeller can be discovered along a route across two floors.

The third floor houses part of the European painting from the 17th to the 20th century, with artists such as Nicolas-Guy Brenet, Alexandre Cabanel and Fernand Pelez, as well as painters from Hérault such as Joseph-Noël Sylvestre, Pierre-Auguste Cot and Jean Magrou. A new permanent display has been set up. By 2030 a new art and history museum is due to open in the former episcopal palace near the Saint-Nazaire cathedral, bringing together the collections of the city's three Musées de France.
