About the museum
The Palais de Carnolès was built in 1717 by Antoine I Grimaldi, a work attributed to Robert de Cotte and Jacques Gabriel. In 1896 it was remodeled by the architect Hans-Georg Tersling for Dr. Edward Philips Allis. It became the property of the Department in 1961, was listed as a historic monument in 1969, and has housed the Musée des Beaux-Arts since 1977. It passed to the municipality in 1994, and an exterior restoration in 2020–2021 revealed its original colors.
The collections, labeled Musées de France, owe much to three major donors: Charles Wakefield-Mori, Gheorghe Bagulescu and Séverin Wunderman. The permanent display covers paintings, sculptures, ceramics, tapestries and Japanese prints, with Italian, Spanish, Flemish, German and French schools. The garden has been labeled Jardin remarquable since 2005.
The museum is closed for works. A project to renovate the interior and create a new route is funded more than 50% by grants and patronage, for a total cost of €5 million excluding VAT. Work is due to begin in 2026, with reopening to the public planned for 2028.
