About the museum
The Cap-Martin fortress work is the southernmost fortress work of the Maginot Line. Construction began in the early 1930s, between 1930 and 1931 according to sources, to watch the border with Italy near Menton.
The work is entirely underground: it lies about 25 metres deep and consists of three combat blocks linked by a 130-metre gallery. It was designed to let the garrison live independently for months.
In June 1940 it came under attack from Italian aircraft and artillery but held its position. The fort can be visited today on guided tours by reservation.
