About the museum
The Sainte-Agnès fortress work was built between 1932 and 1938 on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Franco-Italian border. It is one of the last defensive works of the Maginot Line and watched over a strategic sector of the Alpes-Maritimes.
The fort is entirely underground: its galleries and rooms, covering more than 2,000 m², are dug beneath more than 55 meters of rock below the village. It could house about 350 men and operate independently thanks to its own power station, heating, telephone network, air-regulation system and a room for neutralizing gases.
The fortress work’s artillery played a defensive role during the fighting of June 1940. Today the site can be visited only with a guide, who explains how the garrison lived and how the installations worked. Three former ammunition rooms house exhibitions on the history of the fortress work.
