About the museum

The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice had several locations before settling on the Baumettes hill. A bequest from Augustin Carlone in 1868 formed the basis of the collection, on condition that a museum be created. A first room opened in 1875 in an apartment in the city centre; the museum then moved in 1889 and again in 1901.

In 1925 the City of Nice bought the Villa des Baumettes, built from 1878 for the Countess Kotschoubey and converted in the 1880s into a residence in the Italian neo-Renaissance style. It is also known as the Villa Thompson, after an American owner. The architect Nicolas Anselmi oversaw its conversion into an exhibition space. The “Palais des Arts – musée Jules Chéret” opened on January 7, 1928.

The collections span the 12th to the 20th century: 17th-century Flemish painting, and French painting and sculpture from the 18th to the 20th century, with works by Van Loo, Fragonard, Dufy, Mossa, Rodin and Carpeaux. The museum also holds posters by Jules Chéret, whose name it bears. It is a municipal museum and carries the “Musée de France” label.
