About the museum

The Tourtour fossil museum is a municipal public institution that belongs to the commune. Its collections comprise more than 1,000 objects and specimens of rocks and fossils from the Haut-Var. They were largely assembled by local scholar Victor Zaneboni (1917–1999), a shipwright by trade and a keen botanist and paleontologist, who bequeathed them to the commune.

Other gifts, donations and acquisitions have since enriched the collections. They include ammonites, belemnites, nautiluses, echinoderms, as well as vertebrate bones and eggs, including those of dinosaurs. A mammal from the Oligocene, Bachitherium, found at Céreste, is among the exhibits.

The museum also covers the major themes of natural history in Provence and the Var and holds temporary exhibitions. Besides the part open to the public, it keeps reference collections for scientific use.
