About the museum
The Maison du Bourreau is a house built in 1846 in Draguignan, which served as the home of the executioner and his family at the time when the guillotine was in use. It stands on the Montée de l'Horloge, near the Clock Tower (Tour de l'Horloge).
In 1981 the town bought the house and placed it at the disposal of the Société d'études scientifiques et archéologiques de Draguignan et du Var. This learned society, founded in 1855, led the project of a museum of justice in this place of memory.
The museum aims to show how civil, employment and criminal justice were organized, the people who embodied it and the instruments used to practice it. It now presents a collection of instruments, including a guillotine and handcuffs, and traces the history of justice in Draguignan and the Var. The site is now known as the “Maison du Bourreau”.
