About the museum
The museum occupies three authentic 18th-century weavers’ houses in Ambrières-les-Vallées. It tells the story of hemp, the main crop of the Bas-Maine, which later became the Mayenne department, and of the economic and social life of the department linked to this textile.
The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003. The label recognises the authenticity of the building as well as that of all the objects and collections from the 18th century.
