About the museum

The Musée du Jouet opened in 1992 in the former municipal shower baths (bains-douches) of La Ferté-Macé, a 1932 building designed by architect Félix Besnard-Bernadac, which operated until 1981. Renovation began in the early 1990s.

Almost the entire collection comes from a donation by Guy Bonvalot, a German teacher and avid collector of old toys from La Ferté-Macé. The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003.

The display presents about 1,400 pieces from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, arranged by theme: educational games, board games, racing games and optical toys. Visitors see miniature cars, trains, airplanes, typewriters, dolls, zoetropes, phonographs and musical instruments. Brands represented include JEP, Dinky Toys, Solido and Poupée Jumeau.
