About the museum
The Musée des Vans is one of the oldest museums in Ardèche. It was founded in 1875 from a private exhibition organised by a group of local scholars. In 1923, Louis Rey revived it, and the heirs of the founders donated collections. It first opened to the public in 1951, by appointment.
In 1977, it moved into its current building, the former Saint-Joseph convent, which also includes a former silk mill, on the edge of the historic centre. From 1980 to 2014, a local association ran the museum under a public service delegation. It received the “Musée de France” label in 2002.
Five exhibitions present the geology, culture and people of the region. Rocks and fossils date back about 550 million years, and the collections also cover archaeology, ethnography and medicine. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions, concerts, lectures and readings. It is an ambassador of the Monts d’Ardèche Regional Nature Park.
