About the museum

The museum grew out of the passion of an antiques dealer from Joyeuse, who had gathered tools linked to the chestnut-tree culture in her shop. The commune acquired this collection in 1981 with help from the département. An exhibition organised by a local association was then so successful that it gave birth to a real museum, first called the Musée de la Châtaigneraie.

The site occupies a 17th-century building in the medieval town of Joyeuse, at the foot of Saint-Pierre church. Between 2017 and 2018 the museum was completely renovated and redesigned around chestnut production, a product that is very much part of the Ardèche's identity. It then took the name Castanea.

The route shows how the chestnut tree and its fruit have accompanied residents over the centuries, through a collection of old tools and furniture made of chestnut wood. It also presents the present-day trade of the chestnut grower: maintaining the chestnut grove, harvesting and processing. The visit appeals to touch, hearing, smell and taste, with films, interactive displays and a shop selling local products.

Highlights

  • Old tools and furniture made of chestnut wood
  • The trade of the chestnut grower: upkeep, harvest, processing
  • A hands-on route, with films and interactive displays
  • Family treasure hunt and sensory activities with tasting
  • Shop of producers with 100% chestnut products
