About the museum

The Musée du béret is located in Nay, in Béarn, about 20 km from Pau, where the traditional beret has been made for more than two centuries. It occupies a building in the Directoire style, a former beret factory, restored and fitted out to welcome the public.

The route presents the history of this headgear, which became a symbol of France, its origins and the various stages of its manufacture, as well as the expertise it requires. It also traces its evolution, from the Béarn pastures to the catwalks of haute couture, via revolutionaries and the cinema.

Visitors see old machines and a film on the history of the beret. A shop offers berets made in France near the museum.
