About the museum
The Musée du Berry was founded in 1834 by an order of the prefect of Cher. It moved into the Hôtel Cujas in Bourges in 1891 and took its present name in 1912. It has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003.
Its collections combine archaeology, decorative arts, fine arts and ethnology. They include prehistoric objects, numerous Gallo-Roman funerary stelae, mosaics and ancient wall paintings, as well as medieval sculptures from the Sainte-Chapelle in Bourges and from the tomb of Duke Jean de Berry. The upper floors also showed furniture, costumes and tools of rural life in the 19th century, as well as La Borne stoneware.
The museum has been closed to the public since June 2021. A major project to renovate the historic building and its extensions, with new storage, is still at the preliminary study stage. The collections remain accessible to researchers, and an annual theme exhibition is held at the Maison des musées in Bourges, which opened in 2023.
