About the museum
The City of Bourges is running a large-scale programme to renew its museum offer, in order to create more inclusive museums that are more open to the region and attentive to social and environmental issues. During this period of transformation, the Musée des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France, which was devoted to French craft excellence, became the Maison des Musées.
The first floor serves as a space for exchange with the public. It features a mural covering two centuries of the history of Bourges' museums, a graphic animation on the stages of the project, videos and podcasts about the collections, a comic strip about the life of an artwork entering the museum, and a flexible workshop for playful and educational activities. A space hosts lectures, debates, concerts and readings. Each year a different group presents its favourite works, and one museum profession is highlighted. One area is devoted to works from the Musées Nationaux Récupération.
On the mezzanine, where the permanent collections of the Musée des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France were displayed, the display cases now house an annual theme exhibition of objects and works rarely shown. The collections of the Bourges museums, nearly 55,000 objects, can be explored through a digital portal and also travel beyond the museum walls.
