About the museum

In 1985 the painter Maurice Estève (1904–2001), a native of the Berry region, and his wife made a major gift of works to the Town of Bourges: paintings, drawings, tapestries and prints. To house them, the Hôtel des Échevins, a 15th-century Gothic building with a 17th-century gallery, was entirely restored. The Musée Estève opened there in 1987. Further gifts in 1989, 1997 and 2008 added to the collection, which now numbers more than 200 works.

After nearly forty years of operation, a major programme was launched in 2023: reworking of the route, restoration of works, compliance upgrades and renovation of the reception areas. The museum reopened in spring 2025 with a new scenography by Vasken Yéghiayan.

The chronological route follows the development of Estève’s painting, from his first canvases to works of the late 1980s. It presents around 60 oil paintings, two tapestries and a selection of works on paper (drawings, watercolours, collages, lithographs), some 75 works on display in all. A mediation space, the Grenier des couleurs, offers workshops and experiments for families and school groups. Temporary exhibitions may complement the permanent route.
