About the museum
The museum is housed in the Ferme de Boisjugan on the edge of Saint-Lô, in a public park of several hectares. The estate dates back to the Middle Ages. In the night of June 6, 1944, hundreds of Saint-Lô residents took refuge here under the bombardment, and the Enguehard family took them in until their evacuation in July.
The Saint-Lô agglomeration bought the estate in 1980, and in 1983 the city decided to create an ethnographic museum there. Part of the collection was donated by the association Normandie Traditionnelle; the rest was acquired with support from the Fonds régional d’acquisition des musées. The museum opened in 1989 with an exhibition in the restored residential buildings; the other buildings opened in 2004 and provide 800 m² of exhibition space.
The route covers rural life in the Bocage normand from 1800 to today, with a reconstructed stable, cowshed, workshop and butter room, as well as farm machinery and tools. The museum has been closed since 2021. A scientific and cultural project for 2023–2030, approved in 2024, plans a redesign of the route around food.
