About the museum
The site of the Château de Flers has medieval origins. A 16th-century wing was built under Nicolas III de Grosparmy, and the 18th-century façade is the work of Ange-Hyacinthe de la Motte-Ango. In 1901, Julien Salles, mayor of Flers, bought the estate for the town. The château has been listed as a historic monument since 1907, and the park was classified as a natural site in 1908. The building was renovated between 2012 and 2016.
The museum bears the “Musée de France” label and the Normandie Qualité Tourisme mark. Its collections comprise about 4,000 objects, including nearly 300 paintings: works by Old Masters from Italy, France and the Netherlands, and 19th-century painting. The permanent display also tells the story of the château and its owners.
Since 2019 the museum has applied the Môm’art charter to welcome families and young children. Since 2020, a Micro-Folie has offered a free-access digital museum with a virtual reality area.
