About the museum
This museum, which it describes as unique in France, grew out of collections of old tinplate objects. It brings together two collections bequeathed to the commune of Saint-Arcons, enriched by a very significant purchase. Spread over two levels, it presents several hundred objects, most of them for domestic use.
Visitors can see chocolate and candle moulds, churns, milk pails and coffee pots, as well as toys and military objects. A remarkable collection of sacred art objects completes the ensemble; some pieces date from the 17th and 18th centuries. These objects have little market value, but their preservation is of great educational and ethnological interest.
The visit ends with a look at the future, with a presentation of contemporary tinplate and its 100% recyclability. The museum occupies a house from the late 19th century, that of the village boatman or ferryman, a traditional building of the region. It has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003.
