About the museum
The Musée du Feutre was founded in 1987 by the town of Mouzon in the Ardennes. It is housed in the former cattle shed of the abbey church and presents felt from three angles: technique, ethnology and contemporary creation.
Mouzon became a major felt-production centre in the 19th century, largely thanks to the Sommer family. At the end of the 19th century, the site of a former mill on the Meuse became a wool felt factory run by Alfred Sommer. The town was home to one of France's last felt factories, and the museum traces three generations of the Sommer family.
The collections include felt objects from Turkey and Central Asia, notably tents, carpets and items used by nomads, as well as contemporary works, design, fashion and craftwork. Miniature replicas of the Sommer factory's machines explain how the felt is made; a miniature felting line is set in motion by the guides during visits. The museum also runs felting workshops for adults and children.
