About the museum
The museum was founded in September 1989 by the association Les Amis du Début de l'Aviation. It grew out of a full-size replica of a 1910 Roger Sommer biplane, built at the initiative of his son Pierre. The project took four years and nearly 5,000 hours of research, drawing and construction.
Roger Sommer was a pilot and aircraft builder from 1908 to 1912. On August 7, 1909, in Châlons-sur-Marne, he set a world record for flight duration. The Sedan-Douzy airfield, created in 1909, is presented as France's first airfield.
The museum displays a biography of Roger Sommer, photographs from Pierre Sommer's personal collection, quarter-scale models, vintage postcards of pilots and short films about the early days of aviation. It also features a model of the airfield's first hangars.
