About the museum
The Musée du Fumeur is a non-profit association founded in 2001 by Michka Seeliger-Chatelain and Tigrane Hadengue in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. Its permanent exhibition brings together, in a human-scale space, objects, plants and artworks linked to smoking on every continent.
The route places everyday objects from different eras and regions of the world alongside plants smoked across the globe: tobacco leaves, hemp, 18th-century clay pipes, copper pipes used by Chinese dignitaries for opium, snuff boxes (tabatières) and cigar moulds. The museum also addresses the sacred dimension of smoke in several cultures and the evolution of behaviour.
The building also houses a gallery that presents sales exhibitions every year, a specialist library and a bookshop. A shop sells accessories for smokers, vaporisers and e-cigarettes. The museum also distributes prevention leaflets.
