About the museum
The museum was founded in 1978 by Bernard Marchois, an enthusiast and collector, in the Paris apartment where Édith Piaf lived with her daughter Marcelle. The idea came a few years earlier, through exchanges with Théo Sarapo, the singer’s last husband; after Sarapo’s death, the collector carried the project through.
The museum is linked to the association “Les Amis d’Édith Piaf”, founded in 1967 to honour the singer’s memory. It occupies two small rooms in an apartment in the Ménilmontant district and offers an intimate visit with no explanatory panels: visitors discover personal belongings, photographs, letters and other mementos that evoke her life and career.
After more than fifty years of activity, the founder is preparing to retire, and a project for a new museum is under study. A second association, “Grasse à Édith”, founded in 2019 in Grasse, the town where the singer died, holds a festival in her honour every year.
