About the museum

The Musée du jouet de Colmar opened in 1993 in a former neighbourhood cinema on rue Vauban. It offers a playful, theme-based visit over three floors covering the history of the toy.

Much of the original collection belonged to the painter Georges Trincot. The display cases show toys from the 19th century to the present day: antique toys, cartoon characters, teddy bears, Barbie dolls, video games, model vehicles and robots. The cases are renewed regularly, and the museum shows more than a thousand toys.

The route begins on the ground floor with rocking horses, tricycles, scientific toys, automata and construction toys, as well as a large Playmobil diorama that is rebuilt every year. The first floor is devoted to dolls and figurines, toys by gender, reconstructed children's bedrooms from the 1950s and 1980s, and 19th-century mechanical toys. The second floor is dedicated to trains, from 19th-century tinplate models to realistic electric layouts of the 20th century, with two layouts in operation.
