About the museum
The museum is the work of an association founded by Gérard Terni and Christian Burgert. As early as 1988 the association launched the project of a memorial to honour the fighters and the civilian and military victims of the winter of 1944–1945 in Alsace. With the support of the town of Turckheim, the museum-memorial was inaugurated on November 11, 1993 by the prefect of the department.
It occupies a fine vaulted cellar from the 18th century in the medieval old town, which had served as a shelter for residents during the Second World War. An extension was inaugurated on February 24, 2001. The museum now has two exhibition rooms of about 250 m², and a new extension project is under way.
The collection brings together very varied objects, shown in themed display cases or on mannequins; the origin of almost all the pieces is known. Detailed reconstructions of the life of the soldier in combat, numerous photographs, a film and period videos trace every phase of the battle, without forgetting the fate of the civilian population. Run by volunteers, the museum also aims to be an educational resource for younger generations.
