About the museum
Jean-Jacques Waltz, known as Hansi, was born in Colmar in 1873 and died there on June 10, 1951. An illustrator, caricaturist and watercolorist, he is known for his images of Alsace, its villages and traditions, notably in his book “Mon Village”. His father was curator of the Musée Unterlinden, and Hansi himself succeeded him in 1923.
The Musée Hansi occupies a house in Colmar’s old town, at 28 rue des Têtes, opposite the Maison des Têtes. According to Wikipedia, it opened in 2015 in a former bookshop.
The route on the second floor comprises about ten rooms devoted to the major periods of the painter’s life. It presents his techniques and works: Alsatian landscapes, village scenes, watercolors, posters, objects and menus. On the first floor, a shop sells regional products.
