About the museum

Moirans-en-Montagne has long been a centre of woodturning and toy-making in the Jura. Faced with international competition in the 1980s, the town organised an exhibition on toys and their techniques in 1986; then the Maison du Jouet opened its doors in May 1989 in a brightly coloured building designed by the architect Guy Bonnivard.

The town council took over running the site in 1997, and it gradually became a true museum with temporary exhibitions and educational workshops. It received the “Musée de France” label in 2002. The 2003 purchase of the collection of the Musée du Jouet in Canet-en-Roussillon greatly enriched the holdings, and management passed to the intercommunal authority.

After 22 months of works, the renovated museum reopened on July 1, 2012. It covers about 3,400 m², with outdoor play areas. Inside, nearly 2,000 games and toys are presented on an interactive route guided by the bear cub Nours. The collection comprises about 20,000 objects, from Jura toys to toys from around the world.
