About the museum
The Lamoura museum presents a trade practised by the people of the Haut-Jura from the 18th century to the present day: gemstone cutting. Originally a sideline to farming carried out on the farm, this activity gave rise to specialised workshops. Even today a handful of lapidaries work for leading jewellers.
The trail covers the hardness and beauty of stones, the sound of the grinding wheels and the art of cutting, featuring ruby, sapphire, emerald and other gemstones. A documentary film complements the self-guided visit, which takes about one hour.
The museum is run by the commune of Lamoura and is located on the route de Longchaumois, in a house also known as the Maison du lapidaire. It offers guided tours, group visits by reservation and workshops for children during school holidays.
