About the museum
In 2001, the town of Lavaur bought the former monastery of the Sisters of Christ, a large complex of buildings and gardens in the castrum (the fortified town centre). The town wanted to create a cultural hub there, combining a media library, an archive centre and the museum. The museum received the “Musée de France” label in 2002.
The permanent collections have not been visible for many years, as the museum is being restructured. In the meantime, the holdings have more than doubled thanks to purchases, donations and deposits, with the help of the Friends of the Museum. The storerooms hold several thousand objects: sacred art, fine arts, archaeology, folk arts and traditions, as well as the Puget collection, from a famous dynasty of organ builders from Toulouse.
Each year, the museum organises large temporary exhibitions in the former monastery chapel, one from May to September and another in autumn. It also offers workshops, lectures, guided tours and takes part in the Museum Night.
