About the museum
The Musée du sabot is one of the Terres Vivantes en Normandie sites in La Haye-de-Routot, on the edge of the Brotonne forest. It is housed in a traditional thatched cottage of the Roumois. The neighboring Chaumière aux orties, a 17th-century thatched house, serves as the reception point for the museum and for the wild herb garden.
The museum brings together more than 300 pairs of clogs from France and around the world, tools, machines and a video on the craft of the clogmaker. It presents clogs for every purpose, from the simple wooden clog to the boots of watercress growers.
The village offers other Terres Vivantes visits: the bread oven (le four à pain), a former village bakery that became a living museum in 1979; the 1,000 m² wild herb garden with about 150 local plant species; and two protected yew trees, estimated at 1,500 years old, in front of the church.
