About the museum
The Musée départemental de Villequier was set up in 1959 in the former house of the Le Havre shipowner Charles-Isidore Vacquerie, on the banks of the Seine. This house played a central role in the life of the Hugo family: the shipowner’s son Charles married Léopoldine, Victor Hugo’s daughter, and the couple died tragically in the Seine in 1843. The other son, Auguste Vacquerie, stayed close to the Hugo family all his life.
The museum belongs to the Seine-Maritime département. It holds the “Musée de France” label and the designation Maison des Illustres. It presents the everyday setting of the Hugo-Vacquerie family, the writings of Auguste Vacquerie and Victor Hugo’s literary and graphic work.
The house is surrounded by a romantic garden overlooking the Seine. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, for example on Vacquerie and photography, as well as guided tours and workshops.
