About the museum
In 1996 the town of Conches created a first museum, the Musée du verre, de la pierre et du livre, to bring together its former municipal collections (archaeology, ethnology, fine arts, rare books) with new glass holdings. This focus stemmed from the purchase of works in pâte de verre by the artists Étienne and Antoine Leperlier, grandsons of the master glassmaker François Décorchemont, who worked in Conches.
From 2001 the museum held temporary exhibitions on glass art, first devoted to contemporary creation and then expanded to stained glass and decorative glass arts from the late 19th to the early 21st century. In 2018 the collections comprised around 500 works.
A new museum was set up in a building of the former hospice, on the site of the former Abbey of Conches. The conversion by the firm Dubois & Associés cost around €3 million. Opened on June 25, 2022, the museum took the name Musée du Verre François Décorchemont on that occasion. It has held the “Musée de France” label since 2002.
