About the museum
The Musée de Louviers was officially founded in 1872. It has occupied its current building since 1888, inaugurated on April 15 on part of a former 17th-century convent. The building was financed by Édouard Lanon, who also gave his collection to the town.
Paul Saint-Martin, the first curator from 1873, steered the museum towards fine arts. The permanent display is now spread across four galleries. The textile industry gallery tells the story of Louviers’ cloth-making, including a Jacquard loom. The fine arts gallery brings together some 70 paintings, mostly from the 19th century, including works by Jean Nicolle and by artists of the Rouen school and the Porte-Joie artists’ colony.
The local history gallery holds old photographs of Louviers and its surroundings. The decorative arts gallery presents ceramics by Masséot Abaquesne, faience in the Dutch-Chinese style, a Louis XIV cabinet of curiosities and the bequest of faience by Hortense Vignon. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
