About the museum
The Musée du Vieux Château is located within the walls of the medieval castle of Bricquebec, in the Tour de l'Horloge. It was founded between 1950 and 1954 by André Tardif, then deputy in charge of fine arts, on the basis of a major gift: the natural history and numismatic collections of Canon Lebreton, parish priest of Bricquebec at the end of the 19th century. They include mineralogy, palaeontology, zoology and malacology specimens.
From 1953, new rooms were devoted to local history, with stone elements from excavations in the crypt of the former church. Ethnology collections, notably pottery from Néhou, joined the museum, and a room dedicated to the sculptor Armand Le Véel opened in 1957. In 1968, white weapons, Norman seashells and African minerals further enriched the holdings.
The museum holds the Musée de France label. According to a visitor route published by the town in 2025, the collection is currently undergoing a full inventory and a reorganization of its works. Among the major pieces is the polychrome bas-relief “Six saints et un donateur,” from the early 14th century, listed as a historic monument since 1982 and coming from the town's former Romanesque church. The Muséofile also cites the Norman interior among the site's assets.
