About the museum
The museum occupies the former monastic barns of the Souvigny priory. It offers a journey through a thousand years of history and highlights two guiding themes: Souvigny, daughter of Cluny, and Souvigny, cradle of the Bourbons.
The collections come largely from archaeological excavations in the church and in the town. They include unique objects and several masterpieces of medieval art, among them a column carved in the 12th century, a choir screen with Byzantine influence, Gothic tomb effigies and facsimiles of the Souvigny Bible.
The visit continues in the priory garden, accessible from the museum, where the monastic spirit meets the elegance of the French garden. Guided tours also offer access to places in the priory church that are normally closed to the public.
