About the museum

The Honfleur municipal museum was created on April 11, 1868 by a resolution of the town council, at the initiative of the Honfleur painter Louis-Alexandre Dubourg. Eugène Boudin, born in Honfleur, supported the project and bequeathed drawings and paintings to his native town, a bequest that sources date to 1898. The museum has borne his name since 1960.

The municipal collections were first displayed in the town hall. In 1924 the museum moved into the chapel of the former convent of the Augustinian nuns, a neoclassical building where it still stands today. It holds the “Musée de France” label.

The route brings together many works by painters from Honfleur and the Seine estuary in the 19th and 20th centuries, including Cals, Dubourg, Jongkind, Monet, Courbet, Dufy and Gernez, as well as the bequest made by Boudin. The museum also has rooms for temporary exhibitions.
