About the museum

The museum was founded in 1853 in Montargis and bears the name of the painter Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, who was born in the town in 1767. It is housed in the former Durzy town house, on the edge of the park of the same name. The collections received the “Musée de France” label in 2002. The Friends of the Museum society, founded in 1970 and reorganised in 1988, supports the institution and contributes to acquisitions.

The heart of the collection is the Girodet holding: paintings and numerous drawings that trace his career, from his beginnings in David’s studio to his mature works, which anticipate Romanticism. The most notable are the portraits of the family of Dr Trioson, the artist’s guardian and later adoptive father, centred on “La Leçon de géographie”.

The museum also holds an important studio collection of the sculptor Henry de Triqueti, who was born near Montargis: models for the doors of the Church of the Madeleine in Paris, a plaster of the recumbent effigy of Ferdinand d’Orléans, and preparatory plasters for the chapel of Prince Albert at Windsor. Added to these are older paintings, 19th-century works and an archaeology section.

The building was renovated between 2008 and 2018 to enlarge the exhibition spaces. A flood of the Loing in late May and early June 2016 seriously affected the storerooms, which required a major restoration campaign. Since July 2025, a Micro-Folie, a free-access digital museum, has been installed at the rear of the museum.
