About the museum
The Musée Grévin opened its doors on June 5, 1882, on the boulevard Montmartre, at the initiative of Arthur Meyer, director of the newspaper Le Gaulois. He wanted readers to be able to see the faces of the public figures featured in the news. The caricaturist and sculptor Alfred Grévin made the first figures, and the financier Gabriel Thomas joined the company in 1883 to drive its development.
The museum houses the Théâtre Grévin, an Italian-style hall protected as a historic monument, and the Palais des Mirages, a space of optical illusions and light effects. Since its creation, more than two thousand wax figures have been made; the collection on display today includes several hundred personalities from history, cinema, music, sport and politics. The building was completely restored and transformed in 2001.
The museum belongs to Grévin & Cie, a subsidiary of the Compagnie des Alpes. It offers guided routes, family activities and the option of renting certain salons for private evenings.
