About the museum

The Musée en Herbe was founded on April 1, 1975 by Sylvie Girardet, Claire Merleau-Ponty and Anne Tardy. It was originally located in the Jardin d’acclimatation in Paris. It presents itself as a pioneer of cultural mediation for young audiences, with the idea that art can be discovered through play and humour.

Since 2016 the museum has occupied a site at 23 rue de l'Arbre-Sec in the 1st arrondissement. It offers about 300 m² spread over four exhibition rooms, as well as a 40 m² art workshop in the basement.

The museum is run by an association under the French law of 1901 that is recognised as being in the public interest. The City of Paris supports it with a grant, and private partners add to its funding. It has no permanent collection: it organises participatory temporary exhibitions for visitors aged 3 to 103, devoted to artists, art movements or popular culture themes.

Each exhibition is accompanied by observation games, a visit booklet for children and art-practice workshops.
