About the museum

In May 1968, sewer works on the Place de l'Église in Vienne-en-Val uncovered a wall containing Gallo-Roman sculpted elements: monumental sculptures, dressed stones and pottery. The historian Jacques Debal, a professor at Orléans, confirmed the date of these stones, and excavations were carried out from spring 1969 to 1972.

They revealed a complex site with successive uses: Gallo-Roman remains, a late Roman building, an early Christian church, then a medieval church, demolished in 1905, around which graves were dug until the modern period. In 1970, as the excavation campaigns intensified, the remains were kept in a laid-out square that still exists at the center of the village.

The objects found were first stored in a room of the école maternelle (preschool). In 1972 the archaeological museum was set up in the former post office of Vienne-en-Val. Today it presents, in an exhibition room in the village, the sculptures and objects found during the excavations, and complements the visit to the archaeological site.
