About the museum

The museum occupies the Hôtel Lantin, a 17th-century mansion on rue des Bons Enfants. The earliest document attesting its construction dates from 1663; its monumental staircase beneath a stucco dome is the main architectural feature. The Magnin family bought the house in 1829.

Maurice Magnin and his sister Jeanne built up the collection from the late 19th century and chose to install it in the family home. The architect Auguste Perret converted the former outbuildings into exhibition rooms in the early 1930s, with zenithal lighting above the former courtyard. The museum opened to the public in 1938.

The house retains the character of a collector’s residence. Several restoration campaigns have followed since the 1960s, notably in the early 1990s and then from 2017 to 2025 for the courtyard, the floors and the street façade.

The collections include paintings of the French, Italian and Northern schools, as well as from Scandinavia and England, more than 400 French drawings, and sculpture, furniture and art objects.
