About the museum

The Musée Maillol occupies buildings erected from the mid-18th century onward in the Faubourg Saint-Germain, just behind the Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons. This monumental fountain was created by Edmé Bouchardon between 1739 and 1745 and has been a listed historic monument since 1862. After the Revolution, the buildings of the neighboring convent were converted into apartments; the poet Alfred de Musset lived here, and the former studio of the painter Paul Baudry now houses life-size sculptures by Maillol.

In 1951, the Prévert brothers opened a cabaret here, La Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons, where many artists launched their careers. Dina Vierny, a model and collaborator of Aristide Maillol, bought an apartment in 1955 and gradually acquired the entire building. After fifteen years of work, the museum opened in January 1995 in the presence of President François Mitterrand.

The museum is run by the Fondation Dina Vierny – Musée Maillol, a foundation recognized as being in the public interest. The permanent collection, on the third floor, brings together sculptures, paintings, drawings, tapestries and terracotta works by Maillol, as well as 20th-century art assembled by Dina Vierny. The museum also presents two temporary exhibitions a year devoted to modern and contemporary art.
