About the museum
Maison Gainsbourg opened on September 20, 2023, on rue de Verneuil in Paris. The site brings together two addresses: the singer’s historic house at no. 5 bis, where he lived and worked, and a museum at no. 14. After Serge Gainsbourg died in 1991, his daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg kept the house and its objects intact.
The house is visited in small groups with geolocated audio headsets. A sound creation by Soundwalk Collective, made with Charlotte Gainsbourg, guides visitors through both floors for about thirty minutes, using previously unreleased sound archives.
The museum at 14 rue de Verneuil presents nearly 400 objects from the Maison Gainsbourg collection in eight chronological chapters: manuscripts, artworks, clothing, jewelry and emblematic objects. Eight screens show television, film, radio and photographic archives. A space in the basement hosts small exhibitions on key moments in the artist’s life. The collection comprises around 25,000 pieces, including more than 3,000 manuscripts. On site there is also a bookshop with a shop and the Le Gainsbarre cocktail café-bar.
