About the museum
The Musée des Missions Étrangères de Paris is located at 128 rue du Bac, in the seminary of the Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris (MEP). It traces the history of this missionary society and its work in Asia over more than three centuries. The cultural space of the site is today called Mission 128.
The Salle des Martyrs is the heart of the visit. It came into being in the 19th century around the remains of Pierre Dumoulin-Borie, a missionary killed a few years earlier in what is now Vietnam. A cult developed around his shrine, and the young missionaries of the seminary used to gather there every day. Other relics of missionaries who died in Asia were later brought together there. The room preserves the memory of these missionaries, and the neighboring crypt holds reliquary urns and an engraved list of the martyrs of the Churches of Asia.
The route also includes the Chapelle de l'Épiphanie, completed in 1697, which houses in particular the painting of the missionaries' departure by Charles de Coubertin (1868), the Salle Dumoulin-Borie, dedicated to the history of the MEP, and the Salle Launay, reserved for temporary exhibitions.
